Pinewood Derby
Kits for the Pinewood Derby cars will be distributed to Den Leaders at the November Pack Meeting, and made available for porch pickup at a leaders house
Kits for siblings and adults can be purchased.
We use the rules for construction that come with the kit. Be sure to use ONLY BSA APPROVED components on your cars (as an example, solid axles that come in a lot of aftermarket kits are not allowed).
Need advice? Youtube has LOTS of Pinewood Derby clips and both Hobby Lobby and Michaels have extra supplies.
Friday Night Before
Bring your cars in to test them out on the track. Cars will be weighed and checked in for the races that begin the next morning. This is your opportunity to make sure your car is not too heavy or too light and runs straight. There will be a “garage” set up for fine tuning, so bring your tools, weights (pennies and washers work great) and graphite!
Cars must be complete and checked in on Friday night to participate. Once checked in, the cars are “impounded” until race time. Voting for the Creative Awards will begin, and any adult is welcome to be part of the voting process!
Siblings and adults are welcome to submit a car for the sibling races. Sibling car kits can be purchased. Sibling/adult cars will compete in their own session, but must meet all weight requirements/rules. Medals will be given to the top three fastest cars. The cars do not qualify for the Creative Awards.
Volunteers are needed for setup and check in.
Race Day!
Come and support each rank as they race their fellow scouts to see who has the fastest cars this year. Races for each rank will begin at the designated time. Trophies for the top three speeds per rank will be handed out at the end of the race. Other awards are typically awarded at the Blue and Gold Banquet. Don’t forget your cameras!
